

| In January 1907, the building plan for the Old Opera House, which
was presented by Macon Architect and theater designer W.R. Gunn, was
approved by the Hawkinsville City Council. The $16,470 contract was
awarded and the Old Opera House was completed in 1908. Its seating
capacity was 576 and the stage was 75' by 60' and 18' high. The heavy
canvas curtain was meticulously hand-painted with oils. It would be the
beginning of a magnificent, though sometimes tumultuous journey for the
Old Opera House and the citizens of Pulaski County.
For the next half century, the theater was the scene of hundreds of cultural events, including dance recitals, barber shop quartets, gospel sings, plays, kindergarten programs, and high school graduations. The Old Opera House has opened her doors to others in the community when needed, including providing local churches with a place to worship, and even acting as a movie theater in the early 1950's when the Thompson Theater burned. In 1973, a group of local citizens succeeded in getting the structure placed on the National Historic Register.
